president of Chevrolet showing off the 2010 Chevy Camaro in suburban
Detroit today.
General
Motors showed off the widely anticipated 2010 Chevrolet Camaro to the
media on Monday, telling reporters it will beat competitors' fuel
economy.
"We'll
be promoting the fuel economy story very much," Chevrolet Vice
President Ed Peper told reporters. "We are 2 or 3 mpg ahead of the
competition."
The Camaro is scheduled to be built at GM's
Peper said the 304-hp V-6 version will get an estimated 26 mpg, and the 422-hp V-8 version will get an estimated 23 mpg.
"And we are still working on it," Peper said. He hinted that a turbo four-cylinder version could be in the works.
Sales will begin in the first quarter of 2009.
Peper said more than 6,000 hand-raisers are interested in the car. The
early-year launch will help spur sales, he said, because spring tends
to be a popular time for consumers buying sports cars.
GM
will disclose a price when the vehicle is closer to production, Peper
said, adding that the Camaro will be the "best value in the sports car
segment."
The company plans to launch a convertible version in 2010.
At
the launch, GM expects heavy demand from baby boomers, Peper said. The
company's biggest challenge will be to attract buyers who aren't
traditional enthusiasts.
Initially,
Peper expects demand for the V-6 and V-8 versions will be split about
50-50, as enthusiasts will want the V-8. Long term, he expects the V-6
version to be the sales leader.
Taking on the competition
GM views the Camaro's competitors as the Ford Mustang, Nissan's 350-Z and the Dodge Challenger, Cheryl Pilcher, product manager for the Camaro, said during the vehicle's unveiling in
As for volumes, "we will build as many as we can sell," says Pilcher.
The production version of the Camaro doesn't stray much from the concept car GM showed in
Says Tom Peters, design director for the Camaro exterior: "Our main goal was to get as close to the concept as possible."
The same is true for the interior, says John Zelenak, design manager for the Camaro interior.
Dealers are all excited about the new Camaro.

DETROIT (Reuters) -- General Motors today unveiled the production model of its much-anticipated plug-in electric car, the Chevrolet Volt.
|

CEO Rick Wagoner introduced the small, curvy vehicle at the automaker's Detroit headquarters during an event to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
"The Volt symbolizes General Motors' commitment to the future," Wagoner said.
THINK ABOUT THIS!It's
been a long day at work. You jump in your car and drive home. Upon arrival, you
plug your car into an outlet and enjoy the evening.
Miles traveled for
the day: 38.5; Gallons of gas consumed for the day: 0.
On September 16,
2008, GM presented to the world the Chevrolet Volt in its
production form-the first real glimpse of this electric dream that will become
reality in November 2010.
More than 700 GM employees have spent
countless hours testing batteries, testing electronics, refining the design and
shape of the car in the wind tunnel and proving the technology on the roads at
our test grounds. Loaded with style, top-notch technology and unbelievable fuel
efficiency-the revolutionary Volt will go up to 40 miles without a drop of gas.
Imagine getting to work powered by domestically produced electricity that costs
about 1/6th as much per mile as gas. And for those who love cross-country road
trips, what happens when you want to travel more than 40 miles in one day? Keep
enjoying the ride, the range-extending power source, fueled by gas or E85 will
create electricity on-board to power you along for hundreds of additional miles.
It almost seems too good to be true, but relax, this one is for real.
The extended-range electric vehicle that is redefining the automotive world is no longer just a rumor. In fact, its propulsion system is so revolutionary, it's unlike any other vehicle or electric car that's ever been introduced. And we're making this remarkable vision a reality, so that one day you'll have the freedom to drive gas-free.
Chevy Volt is designed to move more than 75 percent of America's daily commuters without a single drop of gas.(1) That means for someone who drives less than 40 miles a day, Chevy Volt will use zero gasoline and produce zero emissions.(2)
Unlike traditional electric cars, Chevy Volt has a revolutionary propulsion system that takes you beyond the power of the battery. It will use a lithium-ion battery with a variety of range-extending on board power sources, including gas and, in some vehicles, E85 ethanol(3) to recharge the battery while you drive beyond the 40-mile battery range. And when it comes to being plugged in, Chevy Volt will be designed to use a common household plug.

Chevrolet Volt Update-
Tuesday, July 8, 2008 provided by CNN MONEY.COM
General Motors is sticking to its guns,
insisting that the Chevrolet Volt will be ready for production by 2010.
If GM can produce this vehicle on time and in significant numbers - and
it works well and reliably - the Volt will stand as a milestone in
automotive technology.
The Volt is not a hybrid car. It will run entirely on electricity. Unlike other electric cars, though, it will not conk out if the battery runs low before stopping to charge. A small on-board gasoline engine will run as a generator to charge the batteries and keep the car moving.
The Volt is expected to go about 40 miles before that needs to happen and most drivers should be able to go most days without using a drop of gas.
Don't expect the Volt to look just like this concept version. The final car will have a more rounded front end look and a sharper-edged tail.
********************************************
The Volt project is an ambitious one. The aim is to create a vehicle that can deliver the equivalent of over 100 mpg while offering a top speed of 120 mph, and a zero to sixty time of 8.5 seconds.
The so-called plug-in hybrid aims to have a charge time of 6.5 hours, and a range of 45 miles on batteries alone. For many customers, this could mean the daily commute would require no gasoline.
As with any hybrid, an on board generator recharges the batteries when the gasoline motor is running. What makes the Volt unique is that's the only thing the gas motor does - in other words, it never drives the wheels directly. Maximum range - with a full tank of gas and charged batteries - is an impressive 640 miles.
The biggest news on the Volt's development thus far is that engineers have come up with an algorithm for testing the durability of the batteries that can simulate 10 years of use - 150,000 miles - in just over two years of testing. Tests using the new algorithm are now going on around the clock in Detroit and Germany.
GM also revealed that the battery pack itself has been very influential on the Volt's design - both inside and out. The pack resides in the center tunnel and beneath the rear seat, so GM engineers decided to make the Volt a four-seater. Moreover, the battery pack forced engineers to move the rear seats outward, which ended up giving rear passengers more personal space. The Volt's roof had to be slightly altered to accommodate the wider seat arrangement, but GM claims the Volt will be able to seat a 6'2" person with no problem, front or rear.
In an interview with Wired Lutz was candid about pricing for the car. GM has long targeted a $30,000 price tag, but the first cars might come closer to $40,000, he noted. Lutz said his team of engineers have told him the necessary cost optimizations probably can't be made in the short timeframe given to them.
Lutz said GM is holding strong to its November 2010 launch date. He said management is "holding the team's feet to the fire" to meet this goal. When individuals on the Volt project get pessimistic, the ex-Marine said he asks a simple question - "What is there about November 2010 that you don't understand?"
Automotive News says managers have been given a blank check for the project. "The Volt is the No. 1 priority project we have at GM. There are no resource shortfalls," Frank Weber said. "Whatever it takes, we will do. We are working with incredible speed."
GM redesigned the Volt since the first concept car was shown. The redesigned model has not been unveiled, but it reflects the production car exactly.
In an interview with Leftlane, Volt director Tony Posawatz indicated that several variations of the Volt could be in store for the future. Not only is the Volt platform being engineered to accommodate a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain in the future, but interchangeable bodies remain a real possibility. Since the hydrogen layout keeps every component in the same location, it makes it possible for GM to design different body styles - such as a sedan or van - that can be placed on the platform. This versatility means your Volt could be an SUV one day and a two-door coupe the next.In this milestone Year of the Car, it's time to dust off memories of Flint's automotive heritage.
This year marks the 100th birthday of General Motors. It's appropriate that Flint has reclaimed the proud old slogan "Vehicle City" on one of those new downtown arches.
When that phrase originated in the 19th century, it referred to Flint's carriage industry. But it certainly was reinforced through most of the 20th century when Flint was renowned as a world leader in the auto industry.
Flint was the birthplace of GM, which became the world's largest producer ofmotor vehicles. Indeed, in the late 20th century, GM was recognized as the largest industrial corporation in history, and Flint was alive with huge factory complexes of Buick, Chevrolet, Fisher Body, AC Spark Plug and other parts producers.
Those factories were reminders that Flint was where Buick and then Chevrolet grew into giant enterprises, where AC Spark Plug began and where the UAW won recognition from GM in the Sit-Down Strike of 1936-37.
So, how did it start? How did a city far removed from main transportation routes and without a major river or other significant geographic advantage become, with Detroit, the center of the American auto industry?
A man whose father was close to the auto pioneers answered all that succinctly in the late 1960s.
"In the early days of this century, Flint had a group of men of unusual ability," said George H. Maines, then a retired public relations man for politicians and entertainment stars. "There was probably not a more lively bunch anywhere else in the country.
"And the spark plug of them all was Billy Durant."
The fabulous Billy Durant
As a young man, William C. "Billy" Durant was slim and energetic, about 5 feet 8 inches tall with darting brown eyes, a dazzling smile, a Boston accent (he was born there) and a soft-spoken nature.
He had a quick mind, dressed well, carried himself with an air of supreme confidence and had a well-deserved reputation as an excellent promoter and salesman extraordinaire.
He was the grandson of a Michigan governor, lumber baron Henry Howland Crapo, who came to Flint in January 1856.
Before he founded General Motors, Durant was hailed as king of Flint's carriage industries; savior of Buick -- who also salvaged Oldsmobile, Oakland (later renamed Pontiac) and maybe Cadillac as well; collector of truck companies that eventually became GMC Truck; and the financial angel for the creation of AC Spark Plug.
After founding, and losing, GM, Durant created Chevrolet Motor Co. -- which he regarded as his one of his greatest achievements -- and regained control of GM with the help of new friends Pierre DuPont and John J. Raskob of the DuPont Co.
On the side, Durant financed, organized and promoted a small refrigerator company he named Frigidaire. Since everyone wanted a better way to cool food than with a block of ice in an insulated box, the company was a big success.
He backed it with his own money, then turned it over to GM.
In his second time around at GM, Durant made the company eight times larger than the one he took back from the bankers. Later he acquired the engineering operations of Charles F. Kettering, creator of the automotive self-starter that replaced the hand crank and helped popularize automobiles.
As Fred Smith, Oldsmobile's leader at the time Durant created GM, once wrote: "I had at least the intelligence to see in him (Durant) the strongest and most courageous individual then in the business and the master salesman of all time. ... It would be a poorly posted analyst who failed to list W.C. Durant as the most picturesque, spectacular and aggressive figure in the chronicles of American automobiledom."
Durant took a Buick car to the New York Auto Show in January 1905 and corralled orders for 1,100 cars before the company had built 40.Then he moved Buick's assembly operations to a big vacant plant owned by Durant-Dort in Jackson while he raised $500,000 to build a huge industrial complex on Flint's north side.
Much of the money came from his Flint friends and relatives who had sat on fortunes from the lumber days and who now feared he would move the whole business to Bay City, because of its port on Lake Huron.
Buick, which had built 37 cars in Flint in 1904, managed to produce about 750 in Jackson in 1905.
The Arrival of C.S. Mott
Durant's ability to think and act big brought Charles Stewart Mott to Flint. Mott was in charge of the Weston-Mott axle works in Utica, N.Y. Durant told Mott he'd provide him money, a factory and an exclusive contract with Buick if Mott would set up operations next to the Buick plant in Flint.
Mott visited Flint at Durant's invitation during Labor Day weekend of 1905, looked around and agreed. Less than two years later, Weston-Mott had moved to Flint, and operations were under way.
When Mott sold his company to General Motors a few years later, he became a member of GM's board of directors -- a post he would hold for 60 years. Mott eventually made hundreds of millions of dollars in his investments, much of it in GM stock, and created the Mott Foundation.
"I wouldn't be here talking to you, and you wouldn't be here listening to me, if it hadn't been for Durant and all the good, bad and indifferent things Durant ever did," Mott said decades later.
By 1908, Durant had guided Buick from the brink of bankruptcy to No. 1 in production.
He always was interested in new business opportunities, so when Detroit businessman Benjamin Briscoe Jr. came to him with a proposal to consolidate several auto companies in the low-price field, Durant was all ears.
The founding of General Motors
According to Durant, the first in a sequence of meetings that led to the creation of GM occurred in May 1908, when Briscoe joined Durant for breakfast at the Dresden Hotel in Flint and then for a talk in his office at Buick. The topic was a proposal by a partner of J.P. Morgan and Co. who was exploring a merger of auto companies.
There are disputes about the timing, but Durant said that led to another meeting at the old Pontchartrain Hotel in Detroit, where Durant hosted lunch for Henry Ford, Ransom Olds (founder of Oldsmobile who then headed REO), Briscoe and their advisers.
There were other meetings in New York, but the talks collapsed when Ford and Olds told the Morgan partner they would sell their companies for cash but not for stock in any combined company.
Durant, who had pulled all the outstanding Buick stock together, decided he needed an immediate consolidation.
It was now or never. He would go it alone.
He quickly found the ailing Olds Motor Works in Lansing agreeable to a merger with Buick, and on Sept. 16, 1908, Durant created General Motors as a holding company.
This year's anniversary of that date, Sept. 16, 2008, is GM's official 100th birthday.
Placing Buick and Olds under the umbrella of GM as a holding company was only the beginning.

Starting at $22,790, the Malibu Hybrid employs a 2.4-liter Ecotec VVT four-cylinder engine in concert with nickel metal hydride batteries and a 36-volt motor/generator unit to produce a total of 164 hp and 159 lb-ft. of torque. Power is channeled through a 4T45 four-speed transmission, and the system is designed to shut down the engine when the vehicle is stopped, use regenerative braking to charge the batteries, then restart when the brake pedal is released. Hybrid-specific instrumentation and badges externally differentiate this from other Malibus, with the hybrid version's fuel economy rates at 24/32 city/highway.
The powertrain is covered with a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty, while the NiMH battery pack and other key hybrid components receive eight-year coverage at the same mileage. It may not make a radical leap in fuel economy, but with a $1500 hybrid tax credit in place and improved driving dynamics that make it comparable to the Accord and Camry, GM's Malibu Hybrid should be competitive in an import-dominated landscape. -Basem Wasef
2009 AVEO 5-NEWLY DESIGNED, SPORTY STYLING- HAS ARRIVED!

The Chevrolet Aveo5 is the five-door hatchback version of the Aveo Sedan. Much like the Aveo Sedan, the Aveo5 represents one of Chevrolet's most efficient and affordable vehicles. A whole new model was unveiled for 2009.
The redesigned economy car delivers 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway and is expected to be the lowest-priced car in America when it goes on sale in 2008.
Power comes from a new 1.6 liter DOHC engine with variable valve timing that produces more power 107 hp and 106 pound-feet of torque. It has a range of over 400 miles on a single tank of gas.
"Chevrolet is committed to fuel solutions of all types, and the new Aveo5 demonstrates that gasoline remains viable in a highly efficient, affordable package," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. "It is a terrific value, with a worry-free ownership experience that has the lowest ownership cost of any vehicle on the market, yet it packs all of Chevy's fun-to-drive spirit."
The Aveo5 went on sale in May 2008, joining the recently redesigned Aveo sedan. It is available in base, LS and LT trims. The new hatchback comes standard with OnStar and XM Satellite Radio - for three months - and received a 5 Star safety rating, Frontal Driver and Passenger and 4-star Front and Side Rear Crash ratings. Driver, passenger and side air bags are standard on all models.
Customers can choose between a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.
The Aveo5 also comes standard with advanced dual-stage frontal air bags and the GM Passenger Sensing System, as well as standard seat-mounted side air bags for front passengers.
The brake system on the Aveo5 is available with a four-channel ABS system.
Best in class cargo are capacity in segment of 42 cubic feet. More than Yaris at 26, Kio at 12, Versa at 14, Suzuki at 14, Tied Honda Fit at 42. Just fold the rear seats down and you can fit 4 foot sheets of plywood.
While the exterior of the Aveo5 is similar to the previous generation, the interior is completely new and is actually quite surprising for the price point. The Aveo's interior is well appointed and has the feel of a much more expensive car. Fit and finish are much improved and virtually all interior surfaces seem to be of high quality materials. The use of silver accents within the cabin really gives gives the Aveo a sporty and upscale look. Because of the upgrades, GM hopes the new car will make a big impact in the sub-compact market.

Introducing the Cruze — Chevy's all new entry into the compact segment. Cruze was developed by a global design and engineering team with sophisticated styling cues that are fast becoming the signature for Chevrolet. Cruze boasts ample interior space, surprising cargo capacity and comfortable seating for five. With exacting safety standards and a quality build, Cruze delivers on Chevy's promise to offer a smartly designed compact at anexceptional value. Production is scheduled to begin in April 2010.
DETROIT -- General Motors is calling its new compact car for Chevrolet the Cruze, the automaker confirmed late today.
"The name is a derivative of the word cruise," says Nancy Libby, GM spokeswoman.
GM will unveil the production version of the Cruze at the Paris auto show this fall, Libby confirmed.
On June 2, Automotive News reported that GM would build a new compact car to replace the Cobalt at its plant in Lordstown, Ohio. The next day, GM CEO Rick Wagoner confirmed that Chevrolet would get a new compact.
The Cruze will be built on GM's Delta compact car architecture. It will use a new 1.4-liter global engine that GM developed and recently announced in Europe. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine will be used in several GM vehicles worldwide.
GM says the engine will be capable of developing 120 to 140 hp. Sources say mileage could exceed 40 mpg.
Production of the Cruze is slated to start in the middle of 2010 as a 2011 model.
Libby sees the Cruze's main competitors as the Honda Civic, Volkswagen Jetta, Mazda3 and the Ford Focus.
The Cruze will be sold globally and will be similar in size to the Cobalt, Libby said. The five-passenger car will be about 15 feet long.
"We're coming to market as a sedan," Libby said. "There's no news yet on any other variants that could be spun from that vehicle."
Libby said the engine will be built in Flint, Mich.
GM unveiled the Cobalt in late 2004 as a 2005 model. It's been a top-selling car since its launch, selling more than 200,000 vehicles annually. Through June, amid a spike in gasoline prices, Cobalt sales are up 18.5 percent to 114,250. In June alone, Cobalt sales rose 21.6 percent versus June 2007.
The demand for the Cobalt has prompted GM to add a third shift at its plant in Lordstown starting on Aug. 4.

DETROIT -- As it plots major spending cuts and bats back bankruptcy rumors, General Motors on Wednesday, July 16, celebrated the opening of a $15 million green dealership, LaFontaine Automotive Group's new Buick-Pontiac-GMC and Cadillac facility in suburban Detroit.
Among other things, the 64,000-square-foot building has 85 skylights to tap into natural light and reduce light bills and solid doors made of corncobs and wheat.
Eight-five percent of its car-wash water is recycled, and rainwater is used for landscape irrigation. General Manager Ryan LaFontaine said the facility's geothermal heating and cooling system was "probably the biggest expense." The system's 64 in-ground wells capture energy stored in the earth.
"We feel we are pioneers," said his father, owner Mike LaFontaine, at a press event. He predicted any new dealership built in the next five to 10 years will be green.
Consumer attitudes shift
When asked about the benefits of his green dealership, he said, "There's a tremendous number of consumers out there who want to purchase from a green dealer." The group sold 4,000 new and used vehicles last year, he added.
The younger LaFontaine said the family started talking about a new facility in 2000 because it was outgrowing its old location nearby. But the company decided two years ago to "go green" and probably spent an extra $2 million to do that and to qualify for Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Although the dealership originally expected to recoup the payout for the system in 11 years, Mike LaFontaine said he now expects that will happen in five or six years due to energy savings of up to 54%. GM did not require him to go green, he added.
Jim Hall, managing director of auto consultant 2953 Analytics, said, "A lot of people are sensitive about the environment," which can boost LaFontaine Group's business.
Given current high energy costs, the facility's efficient systems can reduce its operating bills and improve the bottom line, he added. "These guys are at the front edge of the curve."
Battling perceptions
Susan Docherty, who arrived June 1 as the vice president heading Buick-Pontiac-GMC from her previous position as GM's West Coast regional general manager in California, said at the event that LaFontaine Group should be applauded for its investment. "With the opening of this dealership and those that are sure to follow, our consumers can enjoy a 360-degree green car-buying and car-owning experience."
She told Advertising Age that if you asked average consumers which carmaker they thought was green, they would say Toyota or Honda. But, she said, Buick-Pontiac-GMC have models that get better highway gas mileage than models from those two carmakers.
For example, the 2008 Buick Enclave crossover gets 24 miles per gallon on the highway vs. Honda's Acura MDX which gets 20.
To make the distinction clear, she ordered what she called a "pocket guide" showing 15 Buick-Pontiac-GMC models and comparing each vehicle's EPA-rated miles to the gallon with that of direct competitors. She hopes to educate both dealers and consumers with the guide, saying, "We win on fuel economy," which has quickly become the top reason to buy a new vehicle.

That's why Chevy offers seven models with an EPA estimated 30 MPG highway or better,(1) plus more vehicle choices today than any brand that can run on cleaner-burning, mostly renewable E85 ethanol.(2) It's also why we've introduced both Malibu Hybrid and Tahoe Hybrid-America's first full-size hybrid SUV.(3)
And why we've put tremendous design and engineering resources in place to make Concept Chevy Volt™(4)-our extended-range electric vehicle-a reality. Now that's technology everyone can appreciate.
The environment and your commute: Can't we all just get along?
Making a difference in our environment is as simple as driving a more fuel-efficient vehicle. That's why Chevy currently offers seven models with an EPA estimated 30 MPG highway or better.(1) Aveo Sedan, Aveo5, Cobalt, Malibu Hybrid, and select models of Malibu, HHR, and HHR Panel all fall into the 30 MPG or better club.
But it's not just about cars. Chevy Silverado offers the best V8 fuel economy of anyfull-size pickup,(2) and the full-size Tahoe SUV delivers best-in-class fuel
economy.(3) New technology like Chevy's Active Fuel Management™ has played a role in achieving greater fuel economy. Active Fuel Management™ deactivates half the engine cylinders when they are not needed and seamlessly reactivates them when you need the extra power.
And there's more! Every 2008 Chevy car, half-ton truck and SUV is equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitor that automatically alerts you when your tire pressure is low. Properly inflated tires can improve gas mileage by up to 3%.(4) Seems small, but if everyone in the U.S. had properly inflated tires, we could save millions of gallons of gas each year.
Why Drill For Fuel When You Can Grow It?
For the last eight years, Chevy has been producing vehicles capable of running on a fuel that grows primarily from the good earth and remembers its roots. That fuel is E85 ethanol.(1) E85 is a mostly renewable fuel source made from U.S.-grown biomaterial, such as corn and other grain products. It's a fuel that can help decrease our dependence on petroleum and burns cleaner than gasoline.
E85 fuel generally has a higher octane rating than gasoline, which can result in slightly higher horsepower and torque levels.
Chevy has over 2 million E85 FlexFuel vehicles on the road today. And we offer more E85 ethanol-capable vehicle choices than any other brand.
Here's our lineup: select models: Avalanche, Impala, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Express, and Uplander.(2) Availability of E85 ethanol varies by state. That's why we have been instrumental in bringing an additional 250 E85 pumps across the nation. But don't worry if there isn't an E85 station near you.
These FlexFuel vehicles can run on either gasoline or E85 or a combination of both.
The Hybrid taken to its logical extreme.
The 2008 Chevy Tahoe already has best-in-class fuel economy.(1) So why mess with a good thing? To make it better, of course. Seems the Green Car Journal agrees - they've named the 2008 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid(2) the Green Car of the Year®.(3)
America's first full-size hybrid SUV is available in two- or four-wheel drive and provides the power and capability you expect from a utility vehicle while delivering efficiency you never imagined. Its hybrid propulsion system is designed to operate in three ways: electric power, engine power, or any combination of electric and engine power. When you need the extra muscle of Tahoe's Vortec V8, it kicks in seamlessly. When you need to conserve, two small and lightweight 60 kW motors get the job done.
And here's the big finish: When you pair the two-mode technology with our Active Fuel Management™ system, the Tahoe Hybrid offers up to 50% better city fuel economy over the non-hybrid Tahoe.(4) That's one hardworking hybrid.
Imagine: A daily commute without using a drop of gas.
The extended-range electric vehicle is no longer just a rumor. We have put tremendous design and engineering resources in place to make this vehicle a reality.
The Concept Chevy Volt, with its revolutionary E-Flex Propulsion System will be different than any previous electric vehicle because it will use a lithium-ion battery with a variety of range-extending onboard power sources, including gas and, in some vehicles, E85 ethanol(1) to recharge the battery while driving.
When it comes to plugging in, the Volt will be designed to use a common 110-volt household plug. For someone who drives less than 40 miles a day, Chevy Volt will use zero gasoline and produce zero emissions.(2) For longer trips, Chevy Volt's range-extending power source kicks in to recharge the lithium-ion battery pack as required. We expect a driving range of an estimated 640 miles.(3)
The best emissions strategy is a zero-emissions strategy.
Chevy has launched a test fleet of
hydrogen-powered fuel cell Equinox SUVs. This fleet hit the streets of New York City, Washington, D.C., and Southern California.
"Project Driveway" is the first large-scale market test of fuel cell vehicles with realdrivers in the real world. Why? Because hydrogen fuel cells use zero gasoline and produce zero emissions.(1) They're a sustainable technology for a better environment. And they ultimately reduce our dependence on petroleum. Equinox Fuel Cell is an electric vehicle powered by the GM fourth-generation fuel cell system, our most advanced fuel cell propulsion system to date. The electric motor traction system will provide the vehicle with instantaneous torque, smooth acceleration, and quiet performance.
The Equinox Fuel Cell will go nearly 150 miles per fill-up,(2) and reach a top speed of 100 mph. Green Car Journal has given the Chevy Equinox Fuel Cell its Green Car Vision Award®.(3) The Equinox Fuel Cell won the award over several nominees, including the Honda FCX Clarity and Toyota Prius Plug-In.
